London Plans New Overground Line, Major Transport Project Expected to Transform the City
London is once again preparing to take a major step in expanding its transport network. A long-discussed plan to build a new London Overground line has now moved into an important stage after an initial funding agreement was secured. The project, known as the West London Orbital, is already being described by many as one of the most promising transport developments for the city’s future.
An initial funding package of up to £6.65 million has been agreed by several key partners. The funding is a joint effort between Transport for London (TfL), four London boroughs—Barnet, Brent, Ealing, and Hounslow—as well as the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation. This agreement marks the beginning of the next development phase before the project can move toward full construction.
The funding will be used for several crucial preparation steps. These include designing new stations, planning rail infrastructure, conducting operational and travel analysis, and running public consultations. All of these processes will help shape the final design of the project before a formal decision is expected around 2027.
The proposed route will connect Hendon in North London with Hounslow in the south-west of the city. Along the way, it will pass through several key areas such as Brent Cross, Neasden, Harlesden, Acton, and Old Oak Common. Interestingly, much of the route will make use of existing freight rail lines that are currently underused.
By using rail infrastructure that already exists, the project is considered a more efficient way to introduce new passenger services while improving connectivity in parts of London that currently lack direct transport links.
If fully developed, the West London Orbital line is expected to provide around 10 new connections to other rail and Underground services. The plan also includes the construction of four new stations, which would significantly improve transport access for thousands of residents across West London.
In terms of service, trains could run up to six times per hour on some sections of the route, offering a faster and more convenient option for daily commuters.
Of course, a project of this scale requires substantial investment. Current estimates suggest the total construction cost could range between £430 million and £610 million. Despite the high cost, many transport planners see the project as a critical investment in London’s long-term mobility, particularly for improving connections across West London.
If planning and funding continue to progress smoothly, the new line could begin operating in the early to mid-2030s.
Transport experts often describe the West London Orbital as the “missing link” in London’s rail network. Currently, many journeys between areas in West London require passengers to travel through central London first, which can make trips longer and less efficient.
With this new line, cross-London travel in the western part of the city could become significantly faster and easier. The project is also expected to support economic growth, encourage new housing developments, and improve access to major regeneration areas such as Old Oak Common, which is set to become one of London’s most important transport hubs in the future.
For many Londoners, this project represents more than just another railway line. It reflects a broader vision of a city with a more connected, efficient, and future-ready transport system.
