According to the World Airport Awards 2026 by Skytrax, London Stansted ranked fifth, while London Luton came in tenth on the list of the world’s best budget airport terminals. It is an impressive result for two airports that are often associated with cheap flights and quick getaways rather than award-winning passenger experiences.
What makes this recognition especially interesting is the way Skytrax measures airport quality. The rankings are based on feedback from travelers around the world, covering everything from cleanliness and staff service to baggage handling and the overall passenger journey. In the 2026 edition, the survey reportedly reviewed more than 575 airports and included responses from travelers of over 100 nationalities.
Luton’s appearance on the list may not come as a huge surprise, as it also held tenth place the year before. Stansted’s rise, however, feels more notable. The airport has not always enjoyed the strongest reputation in past reviews, so reaching the global top five suggests a meaningful improvement in the overall travel experience.
That progress may also reflect bigger ambitions. At the end of 2025, Stansted received approval to increase its annual passenger capacity to 51 million as part of its long-term expansion plans. As London’s third-largest airport, this move underlines its growing importance as a major hub for low-cost carriers.
Both Stansted and Luton have long played a central role in budget travel from the UK. Ryanair is Stansted’s biggest operator, while Wizz Air has a major presence at Luton. They also serve passengers flying with other popular carriers such as EasyJet, TUI, and Jet2. For travelers looking to stretch their budget without sacrificing convenience, that combination of affordable airlines and well-rated terminals is a strong selling point.
Globally, the top spots on the list were taken by Japan’s Kansai Airport Terminal 2 and Tokyo Narita Terminal 3, with Paris Charles de Gaulle Terminal 3 in third place. Even so, the fact that two London terminals made the top 10 is still a strong signal that budget travel does not have to mean a poor airport experience.
In the end, this ranking challenges the old idea that low-cost terminals are automatically chaotic or uncomfortable. With both Stansted and Luton earning a place among the world’s best, London is proving that affordable travel can still begin in a terminal that feels efficient, modern, and surprisingly pleasant.
